Brand Identity For Scapino Ballet Rotterdam
They didn’t make Scapino younger—they made it sharper.
A sharpened identity for Scapino Ballet Rotterdam that connects with younger audiences while retaining the company’s established cultural legacy. Built around circular focus points, structured squares, monochrome foundations and an eighteen-colour performance palette, the system extends across imagery, motion, language and a digital Brandbook platform.
Insights- The core strategy was not to chase youth, but to sharpen the brand: Hear The Youth framed the answer as “not to look younger, but to be sharper,” while reconnecting with Scapino’s original mission of reaching children after the war.
- The system is built on two opposing shapes with clear roles: the circle “focuses energy” and the square “creates order,” supported by monochrome foundations and a redrawn logo with perfect-circle O counters plus 1990s poster-inspired kerning.
- Colour is used as a performance system, not decoration: a black-and-white institutional base carries the company, while an 18-colour palette assigns one distinct colour to each production.
- Motion is derived from dance itself, with letters moving like dancers into position and a custom tool converting physical dance data into animation so powerful movements become raw and controlled movements become fluid.
- The identity was designed for usage, not just presentation: instead of a static PDF, Scapino now has a digital Brandbook platform, a Motion Generator, and an AI Copywriter so the team can produce on-brand assets in-house.
